INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Aim and editorial policy

The Anales de la Real Academia Nacional de Farmacia serves its readers as a forum for information related to the advancement of pharmaceutical sciences. The Journal is devoted to the publication of research papers in all fields of pharmaceutical sciences and related areas.

The Journal publishes articles, communications, short reports, reviews and letters. Originals submitted to the Journal are analysed by ad hoc referees.

Only manuscripts written in English or Spanish can be considered.

Function of Referees. The Editors seek the advice of experts in the research areas of the submitted manuscripts. Referees should estimate the scientific value of the work and also indicate whether the writing is clear and concise. The recommendations from the referees may not always be followed by the Editor who accepts full responsibility for decisions about typescripts. Papers that are not accepted by the Editor will be returned to the authors. Authors have the right to appeal to the Editor in Chief if they regard a decision to reject as unfair.

Copyright License. It is a condition for publication that manuscripts submitted to this journal have not yet been published and will not be simultaneously submitted or published elsewhere. By submitting a manuscript, the authors agree that the copyright for their article is transferred to the Real Academia Nacional de Farmacia if and when the article is accepted for publication. Accepted papers and illustrations become property of the Journal. Please see copyright for further information regarding this matter.

Articles should be no longer than 4,000 words (excluding abstract, title page, and references, but including legends to figures and tables), and include no more than 40 references. Although short articles are acceptable, the editors strongly discourage fragmentation of a substantial body of work into a number of short publications.

Communications are restricted to reports of unusual urgency and significance or interest. They should be submitted with a statement from the authors as to why the paper meets these criteria. A paper will not be accepted if, in the opinion of the Editor, the principal content has previously been released or publicised in any other published medium. The paper should not exceed 1500 words or the equivalent and may occupy no more than 3 pages of the Journal. In estimating the length of a communication, an average sized figure is counted as 100 words and separate formulae and lines of a table are counted as 8 words per line, including headings and horizontal rulings. The title, authors' names, and literature references are not counted. Communications should contain sufficient information, in particular experimental details, to be used to the reader, and to this purpose, the details of representative experiments should be provided.

Short reports are brief, definitive reports. The manuscript should be identified as such in the cover letter. The length should be no longer than 2,500 words including references (no more than 10) and with a maximum of three figures/tables.

Reviews should be no longer than 4,000 words (excluding abstract, references, title page but including legends to figures and tables) and the reference list need not be exhaustive (no more than 40). While most reviews are invited by the Editors, authors interested in contributing reviews are requested to first contact the Editor.

Letters to the Editor should be no longer than 1,000 words and include no more than three bibliographic references. Letters should focus on commenting or enlarge previous published articles, or deal with some aspects of educational or sanitary policy and pharmaceutical sciences.

Academic information. In this section will inform about different courses, scientific sessions and others events that the journal deem appropriate.

Organization of originals

All elements of a manuscript should be double-spaced, and all pages must be numbered in the upper right corner, starting with the title page. Manuscripts describing original research should contain, in this order, the following elements:

TITLE PAGE

Title. It must be in Spanish and in English. No more than 100 characters, not including spaces between words.
Author Names. The full names of all authors and their institutional affiliation. In a multiauthored work involving more than a single institution, indicate individual affiliation by means of a superscript Arabic number.
Keywords. Five keywords (in Spanish and in English) that do not appear in the title itself.
Contact Information. Name, address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address for author to whom proofs should be sent.
List of Abbreviations. Include the expansions and list in the order of their mention in the paper.

ABSTRACT PAGE

Should contain the summary in both Spanish and English. The editors of the Journal can help authors who are not fluent in spanish.Write as continuous text organized as background and rationale for the study, main results, and conclusions. Do not exceed 250 words.

MANUSCRIPT SECTION

1.-INTRODUCTION. Provide the minimum background information that will orient the general reader.

2.-MATERIAL AND METHODS (EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES). Provide a level of detail such that another investigator could repeat the work; for methods that are used without significant modification, citation of the original work will suffice.
Human Subjects. For reports of research using human subjects, provide assurance that (a) informed consent in writing was obtained from each patient and (b) the study protocol conformed to the ethical guidelines of the 1975 Declaration of Helsinki as reflected in a priori approval by the appropriate institutional review committee. Refer to individual patients by number, not by initials.
Animal Experimentation. In studies involving animal experimentation, provide assurance that all animals received humane care according to the criteria outlined in the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" prepared by the National Academy of Sciences and published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH publication 86-23 revised 1985).
Manufacturers. Include the names and locations (city and state or country) of manufacturers when mentioning proprietary drugs, tools, instruments, software, etc.

3. RESULTS. Present the major findings of the study in graphic form if practicable. Do not illustrate minor details if their message is conveyed adequately by simple descriptive text. Mention all tables and figures.

4. DISCUSSION. In the discussion, concisely present the implications of the new findings for the field as a whole, minimizing reiteration of the results, avoiding repetition of material in the introduction, and keeping a close focus on the specific topic of the paper.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT. Acknowledge personal assistance and providers of special reagents. Grant and other financial support should be listed in this section.

REFERENCES. These should be numbered in parentheses on the line , e.g. (7), or (11- 13,17), in order of citation in the text. The list of references will be printed at the end of the paper. Articles may only be cited as 'in press' if a copy of the acceptance notice is supplied at the time of submission. References should include the title of the article and be cited as follows:

TABLES. Prepare tables on individual sheets of paper, double-spaced, and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in the order of their appearance in the text. Do not duplicate material presented in a figure.

FIGURE LEGENDS. Number with Arabic numerals in the order mentioned in the text. Provide a title (this should not appear on the figure itself) and sufficient explanation to render the figure intelligible without reference to the text. Explain all abbreviations and symbols. Type figure legends consecutively on a separate sheet of paper.

FIGURES. The Journal requires one set of figures. Mark the back of each figure in pencil with the figure number, its orientation, and the name of the first author.
Black and White. B/W figures are encouraged. Provide clean laser prints of black and white drawings and high-contrast glossy 18-cm-wide photographs of all halftone figures, e.g., photomicrographs, gels, etc.
Colour. Provide glossy prints in which lettering and symbols are clearly visible against the background. The Editor and the Editorial Committee will select the colour figures to be published. As for the printed figures they should be contrasted, without colour background, and with possibility to appear in black and white in the printed version. If submission is carried out via e-mail, no printed figures are required.

Preparation of originals

Authors must submit four copies of the original (a top copy and three good quality copies) and of the supporting information for communications. The original should be typewritten (or reproduced by a high-quality printer), double-spaced on A4 paper, with ample margins (2.5 cm), on one side only. The copies must be good, clear typescripts or photocopies (on two sides are acceptable).

An asterisk should follow the name of the author who is to receive any correspondence. Author are asked to provide full address for correspondence and may include e-mail address as a footnote.

The attention of authors is particularly directed to the requirement that all nomenclature should be consistent, clear, unambiguous, and conform to the rules of nomenclature established by IUPAC, the International Union of Biochemistry, the Abstracts Service (see Index Guide to Chemical Abstracts, 1987 and http://www.iupac.org/reports/index.html.), the Nomenclature Committee of the American Chemical Society or other appropriate bodies. The recommendations of IUPAC should be followed for units and symbols.

Summary of Guidelines for illustrations. Illustrations should be prepared for a single (81mm) or a double column (172 mm) width. Single column is preferred. The maximum page depth is 166 mm. For best results, artwork should be submitted at its full size so that reduction is not required. Lettering should be no smaller than 7 pt Times New Roman and lines no thinner than 0.5 pt. Lettering and lines should be of uniform density throughout the text. Colour illustrations will be only published in the electronic version of the Journal. See also guidelines.html.

Submission of papers. An original, two copies, and the electronic version on CD of the manuscript (only in the final version) should be sent with a cover letter to:

The cost of changes considered to be excessive will be charged to the author(s). If changes in the conclusions are necessary due to work done or published since the manuscript was prepared, it is preferable to prepare a brief Note Added in Proof. Corrected galley proofs should be returned promptly, preferably within 48 hours by fax or airmail.

Corrections. If errors of consequence are detected in the published paper, a correction should be sent by the author to the Editor for publication in the Additions and Corrections section.
